The results of November 5th are a clear repudiation of the policies and actions of President Quartey and the Monroe County Community College Administration. The residents of Monroe County spoke loud and clear that they disagree with MCCC’s bathroom and locker room policy and specifically the signs placed at all the restrooms.
The candidates receiving the most votes from 1st place down to 4th place were all individuals running as opposed to the new bathroom policy. In addition, both millage requests for the college went down to a resounding defeat.
Dr Quartey has belittled the concerned members of the community and has even gone so far as to make public comment at MCCC Board meetings disparaging residents opposed to the new policy. Other members of the Foundation Board have commented with one going so far as to call me a coward for challenging the policy and doing so in a public way and not privately in conversation with Dr. Quartey.
Dr Quartey was blatantly dishonest in his Monroe Evening News Editorial when he posed and answered the following question.
Does MCCC “allow men in girls restrooms”
Dr Quartey’s answer was the following:
No. We do not! Men must use the men’s restroom and women must use the women’s restroom.
I cannot fathom how a supposedly learned man pulling down a Salary of $312,000 per year and the head of a College could make such a false claim in such a very public way.
Many of you might be aware that I came out publicly withdrawing my support for the college on October 4th, approximately 1 month before the election. I also declined to participate in the groundbreaking for the college’s building project largely funded by State taxpayer dollars.
In addition, I placed a $500 ad on Facebook decrying the college’s policy and asking for petition signatures requesting the college remove the signs and return to the prior policy.
Two quotes from Dr. Quarter particularly stand out to me. “Quartey said some members of the Republican Party had reached out to him and said they weren’t responsible- rather, a fringe group was responsible” and another where he said he was hearing from Republicans “and they’re saying they have no idea why the fringe group is doing this”
I continue to demand that the signs be removed from the restrooms and that single use lockable bathrooms be provided to anyone desiring to use them. The statements of intimidation towards women who while using the restroom would potentially encounter a male in their restroom and sense that it was awkward or uncomfortable must end.
